Let me first start by defining exactly what SEO is and why it is so important. Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short is the process of optimizing your website to ensure it ranks well in the search engines. A search engine is effectively any website where you can type in a query or term and receive a listing of anywhere from thousands to millions of results. The results will all be various websites and their descriptions. Obviously people do not have the time to sieve through millions of results, and in most cases will not bother looking past the first couple of results. It is for that reason why SEO is so important.
If you can ensure your website ranks on the first page results and ideally is the very top result or within the top 3, then your traffic will increase massively. Now there are numerous search engines but it is evident that Google is by far the most widely used and hence the most important search engine to concentrate on with Yahoo coming second. If you can ensure that your website ranks no.1 for its primary keyword phrase then you are guaranteed the majority of traffic who search for that keyword, sometimes around 40% of the traffic! So imagine you have 10 million searching for your keyword phrase a month, then you have secured roughly 3-4 million visitors each month for FREE just from being at the top of Google.

How to master SEO?
I hope you are convinced by now that SEO is essential in order to gain the highest quality of free traffic. If not, then there's something wrong with you! So if SEO is so important, then how do we master it? Well, there are numerous methods, with the main ones being your onsite factors and offsite factors. Now onsite factors include anything from keywords in your domain name, title tags, posts and articles to fast page load time. Whereas offsite factors revolve mainly around backlinks to your website. So which factor is more important, offsite or onsite? The best way to answer this is to look at it as follows: If you have the best onsite factors possible and no backlinks, you will not get ranked anywhere near the first page of Google. If you have terrible onsite factors and tens of thousands of high quality backlinks, then you will get ranked! Obviously onsite factor are hugely important and will greatly increase the chance of you ranking no.1 for you main keyword, but in order to truly master SEO you need to become a master of link building!
