That brilliant shiny colour in a tiny swatch or sample holder may look great, but they can be a bit bright when put on an entire wall. Use a free colour visualizing tool that can assist you to viualize how the wall would look in your chosen colour before you spend money for the paints. If you choose a bright colour, consider confining it to one wall with neutral colours on the remainder of the walls to balance the look slightly. Light colours make an area look larger while dark colours make an area feel cosier.
To make the ceiling seem higher, try a really pale colour or even white to make it recede. You could try painting the ceiling sky blue so it looks like you are looking up to the never ending sky whenever you look up towards the ceiling. Wood gives the space a warmer, homelier, back to nature feel. A space with wooden wallpaper, wooden flooring, and ceiling, lit with warm lights provides a comforting, cosy atmosphere; Get your basic colour scheme right befor you begin.

The colour of your floor, walls and ceiling should all complement one another. You can actually use the very same colour for the walls and ceiling for an unbroken, harmonious look in a room, to create the background before you add the furnishings. Visualize how all of the elements go together, you can actually sketch out the whole look on paper to put together the walls, floor, ceiling and furnishings to find out how the colours go along with one another. Dark colours are easier to maintain because dirt won't show up so easily.
