Making Excellent Fantasy Hockey Picks

When making picks for your fantasy hockey team, you need to think differently than if you were making other kinds of fantasy sports picks. In other words, NHL picks are different from golf picks and MMA picks. Hockey is not an individual sport, but a team sport. Thus, you need to make your draft selections and waiver pickups not only based on each individual's talents but on the abilities of the team as a whole.

For example, when picking forwards, you need to make sure that you pick enough players to fill the center, right wing, and left wing positions. Picking a team full of only high scoring centers won't work - even if they are individually amazing, you won't be able to play all those centers at once. Having a good mix of forwards will allow you to play your team flexibly.

You also need to consider your picks in the context of your fantasy league. If your league emphasizes goals and assists over other categories, you will want to pick the highest scorers you can. However, if your league also counts penalty minutes, +/-, and other categories, you may need to sacrifice goals and assists to make sure you can cover these categories. Thus, you need to make your player selections based on your team's needs. If you consistently fall short in the PIMs category, for example, and have plenty of assists every week, consider dropping one of your assist guys for a player who takes a lot of penalties.

This kind of "team thinking" also matters when you are selecting goalies. In many leagues, goalie statistics count for a large chunk of your weekly success. Many teams don't carry enough goaltenders, or goalies that get regular starts, to consistently win these categories and thus place high in the standings. You may need to drop a forward or a defenseman in order to fit in an extra goalie. This may require you to sacrifice a great individual producer, but remember: you are trying to build the best team that you can, not the best collection of individuals.
