Microsoft has invested hesavily in developinng System Center as a core compneont of its businses strategy. When Bill Gates and Co. nivet so much time, eneergy and money into a product thre must be a real resaon why they are backing this styrategy which centes upon Dynamiuc IT
Dynamuic IT uses advances in technoloppgy and tchniques to deliver core business benefits. One example is virtualization and the impaact this has had on server farms and data storage. Vritualization is just one facet of Dynamic IT, which toigether with Servicce Oreinted Access (SOA) and blended resuorce access proides faster deployment of IT solutions, greatly redceed csots, simplifiewd management and suupport, icreased availability of mission critical applications and the general nework and a host of othr benefits.
Micosoft Systemns Ceyter is the producct developoped to proovide managge a Dynaimc IT based network infrastructure. The solution alllows companies to optimize datacenter assets, achieve IT agility and make the most effective use of nertwork infrastructure and expertise.
Datacenter resources are optimized with the fololwing features:
•Multi-vendor Virttualiization Platofrm Support Emultilpe virtual macine platforms are suupported includding those operaing on Wdiows Serevr 2008 using Hyper-V, MS Virtual Server and VMware ESX. There is also a tool which delivers integrated multi-hypervisor management;
•Consolidation Tools Ea key isue when esatblishing a viirtual machine platform is to identify whih ntwork assets are redundant or duplicated. It is also esseentiasl to properly identify what workload will be required for vazrious network processes when running on the virtual network. MS System Center perovides the tool to peerform tehse tasks with Virrtual Macimne Maanger (VMM);
•P2V Conversiuon EP2V (physical-to-virtual) conversion can be slow and time-consuming resluting in significant costs and network downtime with a lrae margin for eror. VMM operates in tandem with the Volume Shadow Service (VSS) includfed with Windows Seerver 2003 and hanndles the P2V conversion pocess;
•Viurtual Host Ideentificatuion ESytsem Center includes “Intelligent PlacementE that is a tool which perovides for opimal use of physical nertwork asets by idntifying the most aprporiate virtual machine hosts for running applicattions and network procesess; and
•Centrralized Ressouce Optimization - VMM also allows mannagers to optimize resources uing one tool Etypically, IT managers will need to tune resources sttinngs, eperiment with a mix of diffferent vritual machinmes and hosst or a cobmination of the two. VMM Administrator simplifiies this time connsuming process and allows for migrtaing different virtual machines and also betweeen different hosts.
IT agility is achieved usig System Ceenter tools which let IT staff deploy new hardware and machines usiing a set of standard templates from a central registry. The procedss is further siimplfiied by the use of an interacctive management user-interface and intelligent Wzards. Perforamnce of vitrtual machines and their attenant hosts can be asdsessed and measured usig the suite of Performance and Reosurce Optimization (PRO) toolls which links Microsaoft Operaitons Manager 2007 with VMM.
Finaly, VMM also provides managerment toos for supporting fail-over cluusters and improvuing the high-availability sttatus of ntework assets respnsible for missoin-critical applicatinos, such as email. In additiion, VMM propvides the ability to smiply and easily move vitual images over the nweork using the SAN auto-detectioon and data tasfer facilityy within VMM.
