One of the most amazing mechanisms of the body to achieve longevity and wholeness is its ability to rest and repair. During the eight hours that we drift into sleep, there are invisible processes that take place; the result of which yield the body refreshed, renewed and revitalized for the next days equally challenging race. Sleep, though is not the only form of rest that the body knows.

We will discuss the ways our body does to achieve rest from the days gruesome pressure and how it combats against physical stressors and cause it to survive long enough.

1. Sleep- The body restores itself during sleep according to some researchers. They know that neurotoxins are neutralized during sleep, and have reported that cells undergo cell division, tissue synthesizes and growth hormones are released during slow-wave (or non-REM) sleep. Athletes, for example, spend more time in slow-wave sleep than others, and children and young people spend a larger portion of their sleep in slow-wave sleep than older people. In other words, sleep causes the body to birth new cells.

Sleep is not the only way for our body to rest, though. There are other ways to rest the body, soul and spirit.

2. Leisure- According to Wikipedia, “Leisure or free time, is a period of time spent out of work and essential domestic activity. It is also the period of recreational time before or after required activities such as eating and sleeping, going to work or making sure business runs well, attending school and doing homework, household chores, and day-to-day stress.” Will play after work fall under rest? Yes!

Does trout fishing in Taneycomo Lake count? Yes! Anything that is done outside of the context of work or the essential activities that you do to run life is rest.

3. Human Relaxation- This is anything that helps a person relax. This results in a state of increased calmness and ability to focus on essential activities. People who have frequent relaxation activities are more likely to make it through projects and work-related activities than those who dont.

Health and wellness are more likely achieved by those who have ample relaxation activities than those who dont.

Resting is best achieved when there is something that occupies the time outside of the clause of activities of daily life. The ways mentioned above to attain rest may already be known by most of us, but are most of us practicing the true essence of rest. There is nothing in the world nor anything that confronts you that can stop you from getting the most out of life if we do. Rest as much as you can and get as much in life as you can.
