1. Oil based finishes- Whats special about this wood furniture finish is that it doesnt just form a protective coat at the exterior of the wood material; it permeates and infiltrates through the wood itself. Oil-based finishes top the list as the group that produces the best wood finish. There are two types of oil-based finish: Tung oil and linseed oil. Tung oil is extracted from the nuts of the Tung tree and had been first used by the Chinese for their furniture preservation that is credited to have been few of the best-preserved furniture even through centuries of ageing. Linseed oil, though, is extracted from the flax plant trees. However, Linseed oil needs synthetic additive to be stable and thus is redundant to eco-friendliness. It also doesnt provide good wood protection as much as Tung oil does.
2. Milk paint- This is the oldest ever recorded wood finishes used and is extremely strong when bonded to wooden materials. Also, its lime content provides a pest resistance and its fungicidal properties adds to its durability which yields extremely good cosmetic preservation. This is also one finish that definitely is eco-friendly.
3. Shellac Finish- This is the best natural wood finish for years and its use is still recognized by many manufacturers. It is obtained from secretion produced by minute insects native to areas such as India, Malaysia and Thailand. Though it has suffered downfall in recent years, shellac finishes are still considered by wood experts and eco-friendly carpenters as the premier wood finish. It dries quickly and almost doesnt discolor with age. Its resistance to heat, water and scratches and is level with some of today's best chemical finishes and it far surpasses the abilities of other natural products.
These are just the ones commonly used by wood workers and by eco-friendly carpenters and furniture manufacturers. Giving back to mother earth will surely pay off. After all, if anything happens to her by our misuse and abuse, anything can happen to us too.
