How to Cure Back Pain Without Surgery

Back pain can be debilitating for adults. It can limit your activity and compromise your entire quality of life. But back surgery for chronic back pain can be risky at best; theres no reason to go so far as submitting to surgery if there are ways to cure back pain without surgery.

• Psychosomatic back pain – Just because pain is psychosomatic in its origin doesn’t mean that it isn’t real and doesn’t hurt. But considering back pain as psychosomatic can be a little tricky. Stress can be a big cause of back pain; people under stress tend to unconsciously stress entire muscle groups, which can lead to the back muscles going into spasm and not ever completely relaxing. Consider exercise, stretches, yoga, breathing patterns and other methods of stress reduction to see if it can help your lower back pain.

• Acupuncture – The ancient Asian science of acupuncture can act on centers of nerve bundles and can alleviate pain and tension in muscle groups. It may take repeated acupuncture sessions, but many back pain sufferers have found relief through acupuncture techniques. One of the chief advantages of acupuncture is that it is not invasive and requires only your time for the appointments (although unfortunately many insurance plans do not cover acupuncture treatments).

• Massage – Many people’s back pain results from tightly-clenched muscles that go into spasm and never completely unclench again. Massage therapy can go a long way toward working those spasms loose. Consider massage along with applications of heating pads and some time spent in a hot-tub with its water jets directed at the affected area.

• Exercise – the abdominal and lower back muscles constitute the “core” muscles that trainers are devoting more attention to these days. Keeping the core muscles strong and flexible is a vital element of a healthy back. A trainer can help you develop an entire set of exercises and stretches that can go a long way towards helping you know how to cure back pain without surgery. Remember, though, that the abdominal muscles work along with the back muscles to keep the lower back healthy.

• Drugs – depending on the severity of the back pain, analgesics like Motrin, aspirin or Tylenol can help. Failing these, you might want to consider an appointment with your doctor to see about a prescription for muscle relaxers.

• Electrical stimulation – some physicians and physical therapists have been using topical electrical stimulation (from a TENS unit) to relax patients’ muscle groups. Obviously this one will require a doctor’s appointment.

The good news is that as medical science advances (especially sports medicine, which takes into account all sorts of different orthopedic approaches), there are more and more ways of how to cure back pain without surgery. It’s your back, your health and your choice of options ranging from massage and exercise all the way up to surgery. Do some research, weigh the information carefully and start with the least invasive approach first.
