The advantages and disadvantages from tanning would entail not only the scientific aspect of it but also the social aspect of it. Those who are born on the lighter side of skin color tend to look at that dark or tanned skin is more fashionable. However, on the scientific view, there are two sides to the tanning issue. One side would say tanning is good, health wise and socially. Another side believes that tanning is harmful and it really affects our body on a medical level.
We all know that the sun produces two rays that affect the human body - the UVA and the UVB. These either are the rays, which may harm us or be beneficial to the body. Based on various open studies, here are some points regarding the hazards and benefits of tanning.

Risks of tanning:
1. The UVB ray causes burning on the outermost layer of the skin.
2. Too much exposure to sunlight during tanning may result in permanent skin damage or in a melanoma case.
3. Allergic reactions may occur such as in photosensitivity. Any cosmetics, foods or medicines may react anytime you are continuously or regularly exposed to the sun's rays.
4. Prolonged exposure to the sun may worsen some of your medical conditions such as lupus or vitiligo.
5. UVA ray is the one that deeply penetrates the skin layer. This causes pre-mature aging, sagging of the skin and wrinkles.
6. UVA ray also causes eye damage such as cataract or retinal injury.
Benefits of Tanning
1. The UVB ray is the main source of vitamin D because the human body cannot produce this vitamin. Vitamin D is necessary for the bones, the framework of the body. It is also believed to reduce colon and breast cancer.
2. Getting a tan decreases blood pressure and lowers blood cholesterol.
3. It helps increase oxygen capacity of the blood.
4. Considered to be a good way to increase the skin's resistance to infection.
5. Can increases the body's tolerance to stress.
6. Can increases cardiac output and tolerance to heavy activity.
Too much exposure to everything is harmful in reality. The same for tanning, overexposure to the sun or prolonged exposure to it can bring damage to our body. The skin is greatly affected since it direcly receives the UVB and the UVA rays. However, even a regular exposure to it but at a minimal time will give benefits to our body. So, simply consider the hazards and benefits of tanning and you will know what should be rightly done when tanning.
