Many teachers spend several years completing a bachelor’s degree, followed by months of internship before a position can be granted. The hiring process can be lengthy as well, sometimes requiring the teacher to be a substitute or move out of the school district to another city or even state to find employment. Once hired, many teachers seek out a Master’s degree to round out their education and often boost their income through continuing education incentives. But many teachers stop after a Master’s and don’t follow through to complete a PHD, which is often only about two more years of effort (depending on the program).
Also, because some school districts don’t offer definitive compensation for PHDs, the degree is sometimes neglected. However, from another point of view, a PHD in Education offers other opportunities that can open new doors and reward the teacher’s career, peers and employer. Once established, teachers often desire to try new opportunities, perhaps in administration as a principal, or in the district offices as a superintendent. An advanced degree creates credibility for the applicant aspiring to such positions. Also, the more teachers with higher education in any given school or school district, gives each school or area a higher level of respectability. Peers at the school can draw on the educated teachers for advice and guidance.
