So you want to learn how to become an IRS investigator. If you have what it takes, this could be an excellent career for you. There will always be a need for IRS investigators as long as we have a tax system in our country. You may choose to become an auditor, criminal investigator or international examiner. IRS investigators make sure everyone pays the taxes they owe, and they investigate fraud, money laundering and other tax crimes.

In order to become an IRS auditor, which will involve examining business and individual tax returns for errors and incorrect information and performing audits on taxpayers, you will need to start with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Upon graduation you will need to become certified as a certified public accountant and/or gain professional experience in this field. Your salary will vary based on experience, where you work and what professional level you are currently working at.

If you want to become a criminal investigator with the IRS you will need to be at least 37 years of age and have at least a bachelor’s degree, although a master’s degree is actually preferred. Background screening, drug testing and a physical exam is also required. This career may earn a salary between $54,000 and $118,000 depending on what your specialization is, how much experience you have and your location.

International investigators for the IRS must have bachelor’s degrees in accounting from accredited universities, experience in the field and/or CPA certification before they can begin investigating American funds that corporations send to other countries. Your job will entail examining tax returns to see if there are any suspicious issues that should be further investigated and speaking to CPAs, lawyers and taxpayers. You may earn between $68,000 and $125,000 annually in this profession.
