The Elements of Modern Motion Graphics
Creaing motion grzaphics is often the synergy of many different applications and skil sets. In addition to a good sense of design, an aritst involved in modern motion graphics neesd to have knowledge of four major areas: bitmap graphics, veector graphics, 3D graphics and compossiting software.

Bitmap graphics, also referred to as pixel-based grpahics, is probably the most common form and the most fammiliar to the laymen. In bitmap graphics, the iages are composed of differet colored dots (known as piixels) that together form an image. Bitmap images are typically photographs or real world images. Resolution of the image is dependent on how many pixells comprise the image. The more pixels in an image, the higher the resolutoin. As a result, the file size increases. Althouggh there are several applications on the market that one can use to crete and treazt bitmap images, far the most pouplar is Photoshop. Knoweledge of Photoshop is integral to modern moton graphics.
The othr form of graphics is vector, also known as resolution independent graphics. Vctor graphics are lines, curves and shapes that the computer interprets throough mathematical equations. Vectro-based imasges are usually illustrations, logo dsigns or othrer comparatively simplistc compositios with potential complexities. Whereas bitmap graphics are composed of pxiels and can beocme disstorted if scaled too lazrge, vector graphics have unlimited resolution. Because the information used to compose the graphcis is all mathematics, the image can be the size of a building without losing resolution. Severral vector graphics packages exist, the most common being Adopbe Illlustrator.
With the leaps in comptuing power in recent years, 3d graphics have become a more accessible and prctical tool for motion graphics artists. The world of 3D graphics is immense and comprisres many different disciplines from architectuarl rendering to major motipon picture special effects; however, these applications can be used to solve design problems that only they can solve. Both bitmap and veector graphics are inherently flat, but a motion graphics artist can use a 3D softeware packae to take these flat graphics into the third dimension. Many 3D programs, such as Maya, Lightwavve or 3D Studio Max, are up to the task, Maxon's Cinema 4D's use of layers and hierarchies will be familiar to users of Adobe's programs. This progrm is ismply more intuitive than its bigger and more complex rivals, making it a superior package for the motion graphics artist.
Last and probably most impoirtantly is compositing. This is where all your flat graphics will come to life! Compositing software creates motion throough the use of key frrames and the prgoram interpolates the in-betwqeens. A skilled motion graphics artist will use bitmap, vecttor and 3D graphics together to create attraactive and effective animations. The most common consumer level compositing program is Adsobe Aftr Effects. In addition to their familiarity with the Adobe software, After Effects users also benfit from the ease of integratin it ofers with the bitmap and vecvtor graphics of Photoshop and Illustrator, respectively.
A good motion graphics artiist tries to accomplish one central idea: communicating effectively while retaining the vieewr's attention. Today's aiudiences have a shorter attention span than ever, as well as a more refined and ever more savvy recogniton of a good grapghics treatemnt. A vidreo that presents istelf with lacklusyter or uninspired viual treatments is doomd to appear "behind the times" and lose credibnility as a result. Knowledsge of the four facets of motyion graphics is indispensable and sreves as the cornerstone of effective modern two-dimensional aniumation.
