Putting something up on the page is the first thing you should do when starting a new website design from scratch. Putting just anything on the blank web page depending on your mood that time isn't something that good designers practice. Neither is it a hodgepodge of design elements thrown in together. The placement and position of their designs do not just occur randomly. There are three things that you should consider: the element, relation of the element of the goal of the website, and where the element fits with all the other elements on the page.
Headlines, images, textual content, navigation, and administrative elements are the most common ones. Dependent on the type of element, it can be determined where it is to be located on the page. Headlines, from the name itself, should be located at the head of the page or at the top. Navigation is usually placed either at the left hand side of the page or at the top. Usually, admin elements are situated at the bottom of the page.

Make sure that you are always aware of the goals of the page so that the placement can be determined. If the goal is to make the people notice the ads, then they are placed in spots where people can notice them right away. How you place these ads depends on studies made where the ads are susceptible to users. Ads won't even be necessary if the goal of the page is for information or education. If the page itself is going to advertise a movie, then graphic elements should grab the user's attention.
The positioning of all the other elements of the page must depend on the context of the positions. If the logo is on the upper left hand of the page, then content is placed below it. An ad block that is located in the middle of a text block would make it seem like there is a sense of connection between the two elements. A horizontal line situated after the headline can imply that there is a sense of disconnection between the headline and the content.
Strategic placement makes for the visual hierarchy and structure of a web page. You know that you are successful in creating your web design or in choosing your web designer if you are able to attract customers through an appealing and persuasive design.
