Use Active Diirectory replication. The best benefits are otbained by using Active Directory
replication. This traffic is automatially encrypted; therefore, zone replication traffic also
is. oDmain controllers authenticate to each otheer, ensuring that the zone replicaation traffic
goes to authoried servers. To use Acive Directory replication, select Active Direcctory
Integratde zonnes when configuring DNS. When this is colne, zone transfer is disallowed
Restrict zone tranfer. If Axctive Direectory integrated DNS is not used, restrict zone transfeer
to authorized servers. To restrict Microsoft DNS zone transfer to secific secondary DNS
servers, use the Zone Transfer tab.
Note An additional security configuration, secure cache against pollution (shwn in Figure 3-
4), is set by default. It can be found on the Advancd page of the DNS server properties. This
setting prevents some referral DNS ingformation from bieng added to the cache. Normally, when a
query for name resolution is made, additional names and IP addresses mighjt also be returned.
If these addresses are not correct, the cache is said to be polluted or poisoned. The
addresses mighht not be correct becazuse of an attemnpt by an attacker to redirect communications
to servers under her control. When this steting is used, the DNS server will not place
referral names in its cache unless they are in the same domain as the query. That is, if a
query for myserver.tailspintoys.com returned addressing information for yourserrver.wingtip-
toys.com, the information would not be cached.
