A ninja is thought as a "covert agent or mercenary of feudal Japan specializing in unorthodox arts of war." The functions of the ninja involved espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, along with open combat in several circumstances." Ninjutsu does not have a clear history because this martial art was meant to be practiced furtively. The object of the art was concealment, thus, the discipline follows the actual practice.

What we do know is that the art originally came from the land of the rising sun, Japan. This art from was based on complicated techniques of survival.

It has been said that Juhakkei, a ninja, studied side by side with a samurai warrior named Juhappan. They made two distinct martial arts with really similar standards. In Ninjutsu, these came to be recognized as the 18 disciplines which has now turn out to be the standard in which all schools of Ninjutsu are to conform.

Another figure in the development of Ninjutsu was a man who was called Masaaki Hatsumi. Hatsumi heads the Bujinkan Dojo. Hatsumi was among the few original teachers of Bujinkan. He was obligated to modernize the Ninjutsu traditions to adjust to the changing and developing needs of the younger generation of Japanese individuals. Hatsumi is now known as the overall head of Ninjutsu itself. It's believed that he has in his possession the Densho or ancient scrolls on which the 18 disciplines were originally written. The ancestry of Hatsumi can be traced back to 34 generations which make authorities on Ninjutsu consider his family as the original founder.

Ninjutsu is one of the most popular subjects for Hollywood movies and TV shows, Way of the Ninja, the Kill Bill series, Mortal Kombat, Ninja Assassin, Ninja 2010, to name a few. But, sad to say, none of these movies are true to history. Real ninjas may find Hollywood's version somewhat exasperating or even embarrassing. But because of the ninja's vow of secrecy, they cannot come out within the open and show the truth of the art. It is also possible that Ninjutsu's nasty reputation came from the entertainment industry. Nevertheless, true followers of Ninjutsu understand the actual meaning of the art.

Ninjutsu is not as practical as a martial art as it once was in Japanese history. There are still a lot of individuals who believe that it has some applications in society at the present time.
