Do you want to learn how to become a catering director? If you are passionate about food and cooking and have good interpersonal and leadership skills, this could be the ideal career for you. Catering directors may work for large catering companies, hotels, resorts and event halls, or run their own operations. The job involves leading staff and working with clients who require food and service for events such as weddings, birthday parties, anniversary parties, holiday soirees, charity events, corporate functions and much more. The job is fast-paced and often stressful, but it can also be very rewarding.

If you are going to become a catering director you need to be able to work with people. You will have a staff working underneath you that you will need to direct, and you will have clients ranging from event planners to brides-to-be to wealthy party throwers who may be very demanding and meticulous. In addition to cooking and communication skills you will also need a food preparation license based on the qualifications of your state, and if you run your own operation you’ll need a business license.

There are no educational requirements for this job, but many catering directors either get culinary training or degrees in hospitality management. Business degrees are also helpful for those opening up their own catering operations. You should know that this career will require working long hours, nights, weekends and holidays – if that schedule doesn’t work for you then this job may not be a good choice. If you’re still wondering whether this career is a good move for you then it would be a good idea to get a job in the food service industry to get a taste for what it’s like. This will also augment your experience and help with the job application or business building process.

The average salary for catering directors in the United States is around $50,000, but this can vary greatly. If you have a great deal of experience and work for a very prestigious resort, hotel or catering company you could make much more. A successful catering business owner could also earn much more with good service offerings and the right high-end clients.
