Most of the lighted nocks are typically glued on to the tapered aluminum and many bow hunters prefer replacing these themselves. However, the process can be tedious and time consuming so a bit of patience is needed.
Methods you need to avoid
If any of the techniques to replace your lighted nocks calls for cutting or chipping a portion of the aluminum or if the technique results in lumps on the nock then it will result in an improper fit. One of the things you absolutely need to ensure while replacing your lighted nocks is that a perfect fit is needed. Nothing else will suffice. Having a bad fitting nock can mean missing your target game and even a non impact shot.
Factors that affect replacement
It all depends on the method and manner in which the original lighted nocks have been installed. Most manufacturers tend to use a lot of glue while attaching the nocks which can make replacement a complex process. However there are certain cleaning taper tools which can help you remove any excess glue (even the last remnants) and even repair damaged surfaces of the taper. Even if you do not have access to such a tool just make sure that you do not damage the taper surface while replacing the lighted nocks.
How to remove the nocks?
If the glue is not too much, then you can easily remove the original lighted nocks with just a sharp knife with a strong blade. At other times, you could simply remove them without any cutting involved. Start by holding the shaft tightly and then place the blade’s backside along the string slot of the nock. Then rotate the nock to make the glue joining loose. If the glue amount is small, then the joint should come off easily otherwise it may take more effort. Incase the joining does not get removed easily, you could try using a rotating cut starting from the bottom and working in a spiral manner to reach half the taper portion. This will usually let the lighted nocks split open. Make sure that while cutting with the knife that you do not make a cut inside the aluminum metal.
How to attach the new lighted nocks?
Once you have the old nock removed you will need to attach the new lighted nock. Use a taper cleaning tool to remove the last trace of glue and repair any lumps over the taper surface. Then without applying any glue onto the surface start by gently rotating the new nock around 2 3 turns as though you are turning a nut on a thread. Gradually increase pressure as you stick the new nock to the surface. This method of attaching new lighted nocks will ensure that the alignment is perfect and accurate. Now you need to apply a small amount of glue (one drop measuring the same size of a wooden match head). Then place the nock over the glue and keep rotating it to spread around the glue over the taper surface. Once you reach the alignment point you need to stop rotating the nock. This will fasten your new nock to the taper surface perfectly.
