Collecting Data is the Key to Troubleshooting Engine Performance

Not all auto scanners are created equally. In fact, there are a great many entry level units that will read an OBD-II error code on vehicle models after 1966, but there will be gaps. For the serious do-it-yourselfer or technician, the real deal is a car diagnostic tool that has interfaces from multiple sources.

The Actron Elite Pro Scanner for instance can perform what a good auto scanner should with detailed displays of manufacturer error codes and text descriptions. It stores the previous errors along with performing a continuous scan of new codes. Error code reset capabilities must also be present to properly reflect the completion of the car’s maintenance or repairs. A PC interface exists so that error codes and emission data can be transferred to a computer for trending and reporting. But these diagnostic tools also interface with other tools like a car thermometer that can read the car’s temperature in ranges from -27 degrees to 428 degrees. The data can be integrated and loaded into the PC through hardwire links to the car diagnostic tool.

Other features of the Elite Pro Scanner and the higher end diagnostic scanners are the ability to capture data points from multiple regions of the car’s OBD system. Capturing data is a key component in a car diagnostic tool. The data allows the mechanic to pinpoint problems with the car. The freeze frame and capture features of this type of car diagnostic tool become like a car video camera. Monitoring data is captured and stored on the device over a period of time. Once the collection is complete, a frame sequencer allows the technician to walk through each point of data, freezing the frame and displaying the data. Forward and backward display capabilities allow the technician to more easily diagnose the problem since nearly all of the components—at least in modern engines—report on performance and run-time statistics.

For any technician, having a diagnostic tool as powerful as the Elite Pro Scanner could effectively improve shop performance.
