The term backpacking has originally been used for a form of international low cost or budget traveling. There are many aspects that differentiate this traditional form of backpacking from other forms of tourism. In most cases is the use of public transport to travel the preferred variant to move between the different locations the adventurer wants to visit. As hotels are too high-priced and too private - meeting new people is another ambition of the most backpackers - youth hostels are the most demanded sleeping spots.
The duration of the trip is in almost every case much longer than the time spend on usual vacations. To see as much as possible and experience new ways of life it just needs more time than two or three weeks. The backpackers travel often "alone". Alone means in this case, that they start without someone they know so they have to make new friends if they don't want to stay for themselves. This makes the backpacking an experience and chance that helps the mostly young people to learn for their lifes and sometimes to find to themselves.

Last but not least the fact that gives the backpacking its name is that almost everyone uses a big sack carried on the back to carry the things they need. As a backpack is the most flexible way to transport one's clothes, shoes and souvenirs it's number one among these travelers. You have the chance to make trekking tours but you can also leave your sack carried on the back in the hostel.
Today the backpacking isn't anymore just a way of low budget journeying but has become way more and for some people it's already a lifestyle. It has also become way more mainstream and is a popular activity among young people who try for their first time to discover foreign places and countries by themselves.
The most important aspects of a backpacking journey are to see and discover other cultures and countries with another language than ones mother tongue and to meet new people from all over the world. Sometimes it takes willpower for the young people to start their adventure alone or to talk to complete strangers, but this is a foundation and experience for their lives.
Especially the high-tech changes in the 2000s helped to popularize backpacking. Today a journey far from home doesn't mean that you can't stay connected with you friends. When you traveled a few years ago, the only chance to give a sign of light to your relatives at home was a costly call from a phone box or something similar. Today, backpackers "Skype" with their friends at home, write about their newest experiences in Facebook and use the built in webcam of their laptops or netbooks to show themselves.
The planning of the tour is also much easier today because of the cyberspace and digital guides. You don't need a whole route in the beginning, you just go where you like to and from there you search the cyberspace for new ways to go. So backpacking will probably become even more demanded in future, especially among young people. It won't replace the normal beach holidays but become and for many already is a good and well known option.
