The 188 stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth) is that the template upon that the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are primarily based upon. Of course, ALL of the lots of Hollywood movies we tend to have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188+ stage template.
Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is often the template you must master if you're to reach the craft.

THE 188 STAGE HERO'S JOURNEY involves a range of major phases, together with:
a) The arrival from Another World into an Normal World.
b) The Ordinary Self, that has come back about as a results of being in the Ordinary World.
c) The encouragement from the Standard World into a New World.
d) The gradual dissolution of the Old Self.
e) The turning into of the New Self.
f) The thrusting off from the New Self and New World.
g) The confrontation with challenges.

THE MYTH OF CONFLICT - FOCUS ON TRANSFORMATION AND TRANSMOGRIFICATION
A pervasive myth argues that the essence of story is conflict. This is very misleading.
The essence of all successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters is Transformation, that occurs by taking the Hero on a Journey. It is the Journey that provides the Hero the capability to beat challenges that were previously unconquerable. It's the New Self that's in a position to overcome challenges that the Recent Self might not.
Transformation is psychological and physical (Transmogrification: to alter in appearance or kind).
Sometimes the Transmogrification isn't obvious. But if it's not there literally, then it is there symbolically - blood, the colour red and physical wounds are all symbolic references to it. A sensible literal example is The Godfather (1972): Capt. McCluskey punches Michael in the face. Later, when the injury has been long repaired, it's noted that Michael appearance totally different (better).
The psychological Transformation is typically additional obvious: In Annie Hall (1977), Annie's attitudes, beliefs and behaviour change: from dependent and keep in New York to freelance and confident in Los Angeles.
