The 188 stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth) is that the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the tons of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based mostly on this 188+ stage template.

Understanding this template may be a priority for story or screenwriters. This can be the template you want to master if you are to achieve the craft.

[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to any or all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].

THERE IS ONLY ONE STORY
THE 188 STAGE HERO'S JOURNEY:
a) Tries to faucet into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it ought to be told.
b) Provides the writer more structural components than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid purpose and therefore on.
c) Gives you a tangible process for building and releasing dissonance (establishing and achieving catharses, of which there are usually four).
d) Tells you what to write. For instance, at a certain stage of the story, the focus ought to be on the Call to Adventure and the micro components within.

ABRIDGED TIPS, EXCERPTS AND EXAMPLES:

*****First Threshold Guardian*****
Before the Hero et al enter the Initial Threshold, they need to pass a Threshold Guardian. In Star Wars (1977), Luke and Obi Wan should pass the Storm Troopers into Mos Isley. In Goodfellas (1990), the young Henry Hill gets arrested.

Magical Gift. This is often usually where a Magical Gift is used. In Star Wars (1977), Obi Wan uses his powers. In Jason and also the Argonauts (1963), the Goddess uses one among her spells.

*****Ordinary Self*****
There are certain aspects of the Hero's Standard Self that are commonly created specific, as well as:
Innate Capabilities. Once we have a tendency to meet the Hero, we learn of his or her capabilities. Typically Hero's have supernatural skills, that in the modern day translates into them being exceptional at something. In War of the Worlds (2005), Ray Ferrier is superb at his job - that we know by the manner he sensitively handles the load he is lifting at work. In Gladiator (2000), we have a tendency to discover that Maximus is a wonderful swordsman in battle.

Challenge Feasibility. One purpose of demonstrating the Hero's Capabilities (on top of) is to demonstrate that the challenges he (or she) can face are surmountable. In Gladiator (2000), we tend to believe that Maximus can quickly become a gladiator as a result of we have a tendency to are [early on] exposed to the very fact that he is capable in battle and with a sword. In Come of the Jedi (1983), we have a tendency to don't believe that Luke could be a Jedi as a result of we were not exposed to the completion of his training. This can be a significant failing of this movie. In Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), we have a tendency to believe that Indy is capable of looking for the Ark as a result of we have a tendency to initially see him retrieve the treasure in South America.
