Floods are some of nature's terrifying disasters which can cost millions of dollars and sometimes even lives. As soon as water subsides, people face a problem regarding flood damage.

Initially, contact your insurance provider and ask whether they cover natural disasters such as this and ask whether they can help you. List down or come up with an estimate of the total property damage, take pictures of your residence or your business as proof.

The next step is cleaning up. Remove as much mud as you can before flushing the rest with water. Sanitize the flooded area including all the pieces of furniture and fixtures and all other objects come in contact with the flood water because flood water is loaded with pathogens.

Another important aspect that needs to be dealt with properly is the prevention of the spreading of illness especially through kitchenware. Pathogens could easily get to us when they come in contact with the food we eat and this is why kitchenware should be disinfected properly. It is advised that kitchenware be soaked in hot water for several minutes and counters or cupboards be disinfected before storing the kitchenware.

Beds, couches and other upholstery should be let to dry. Try taking out any mud off them. Most upholstery can still be used if they are cleaned by professionals. Do not attempt to clean them yourself as flooded upholstered furniture pieces are full of pathogens. Documents, books and photographs should be dried carefully to avoid more damage. Partially dried books can be pressed together to prevent the paper from crumpling.

Call an electrician and have him take care of all your electrical appliances. Don't plug them yet because you are at risk of being electrocuted. If you have vehicles, contact your car insurance and don't forget to take pictures as proof. Some owners sell or trade in their cards or sometimes brought to repair shops for servicing.

Additional flooding can occur so always be alert for warnings and be informed of upcoming typhoons. Listen to the local radio or watch the news on television. You should always be prepared for such calamities and plan well.

Floods don't only cause physical damage but emotional and physical stress as well. Look out for your family and yourself and seek professional help if necessary.
