While it is possible to create your organic garden without a bunch of expensive equipment, having the right gardening tools can be an amazing time saver.
The more you work at organic gardening the more apparent it will be that there are some tools that are only good for certain projects. Start out with a few well known "staples" in your toolbox and then buy more tools as you find that you need them. Here are a few tools that you should purchase now to help your first gardening experience go more smoothly.

No matter what "level" of gardener you are, you are going to want to have some good gardening gloves. Gardening gloves are essential because they protect a gardener's hands while he or she works. Gloves protect your hands as you dig in the dirt-something that most gardeners find uniquely satisfying. For example, when you are pruning rosebushes or other plants with thorns, you will want to wear gloves to protect yourself against scratches and being stuck.
Gloves also provide protection for your hands when you work with substances that will leave residue behind like fertilizer and compost. Gloves can also protect your hands against bugs you might encounter on your plants or in the dirt.
Having a garden spade in your toolbox is essential if your garden is going to contain smaller and more delicate plants and flowers. A garden spade an help you dig up weeds. Spades are also good for helping you clear things away from your plants without damaging their bases. Seed planting is also easier with a spade. You probably won't use your spade every single day, but you will be glad you have it on hand when you have delicate earth work to get done. Using your spade instead of your hands will save you lots of time and energy no matter what kind of gardening task you need to complete.
A garden rake is a must have. A garden rake is different than the kind of rake you are probably thinking of (which is used to gather leaves and larger debris). A garden rake is more sturdy and not as long and it has very strong steel teeth. Adjustable width garden rakes are far superior to fixed width rakes because you can make them fit into just about any project that you take on. You will save a lot of money if you opt for the rake with the adjustable width because it can be used in just about any gardening project while a fixed width rake cannot. You use garden rakes to smooth out and make your garden dirt level.
You might also think about buying kneelers. You are going to be spending a lot of your gardening time on your knees or crouching down. You can easily make your own garden kneelers out of Styrofoam or similar materials-anything soft will do for you to lean your knees on. If you don't have these things on hand you can buy specially made gardening mats. Kneelers help to provide a barrier between your knees and the ground. They can also do a great deal to protect your clothing from the wear and tear that comes from gardening.
Puttering around in your organic garden is how a lot of people relax. The nice thing about organic gardening is that you can do it year round, indoors and outdoors and with as big or as small plants as you want to grow. When you use the right gardening tools the experience is even better because you get a lot more done and are more free to just enjoy your hard work!
