The state of Maryland offers legislative monetary awards to students entering or continuing their college or university studies. These awards are intended to help state residents to further their education, despite any limitations set by their finances. Awarded annually, Maryland delegate scholarships are open to a wide variety of people who fulfill certain characteristics.
What Is Your Current Level of Schooling?
You must be at least a high school senior to apply for Maryland delegate scholarships and students enrolled in an undergrad or graduate degree program can also apply.
Where School Are You Attending?

The school you are or will be attending must be in the state of Maryland. There is only one exception - if your major is not offered within the state you can fill out a Unique Major Application while you apply for the award. Your representative will decide whether your major and choice of school is eligible for the award.
Besides MD colleges or universities offering two and four-year degree programs, a selection of private career schools will also make you eligible for Maryland delegate scholarships.
Both full time and part time students qualify.
What Is the Application Process?
Often you will need to apply directly to your representative for a legislative award. Find out who has been elected in your area by calling the Board of Supervisors of Elections for your county or searching through a list of representatives provided by area scholarship foundations. Write directly to your representative for further instructions.
Some county legislators will have a third party distribute the award for them. In that case, contact that third party to find out the requirements and submit the application.
When Should You Apply?
Get in contact with your representative in February and plan to have your application submitted by the beginning of March. Sometimes there are funds available for Maryland delegate scholarships past the initial spring award deadline, but you don’t want to risk it.
Remember that legislative awards do not automatically renew. You must re-apply for them in the same way every year. In some cases you may not need to fill out the application again.
What Is the Value of the Award?
The value or amount of the award varies in each county and can also be adjusted for different districts in that country. The distribution is managed by your representative. Maryland delegate scholarships are no less than $200 and no more than the price of your annual tuition or $19,000, whichever is less.
Be aware that eligibility does not guarantee an award. There may not be funds available to cover all of the eligible applicants.
Are There Any Other Determining Factors?
Despite where you live, where you plan to go to school and for what major, you also need to demonstrate a financial need along with a proven academic ability. A high grade point average and a written description of your financial situation are generally required to receive Maryland delegate scholarships.
With all of these factors in your favor, all that’s left is the application procedure. You can take advantage of this generous gift from your delegate by putting together an application for the upcoming year. Your education is something to be treasured.
