With karaoke becoming one of the hottest new trends in entertainment, it brings with it some new terminology. For example if you are the Host, then you can dub yourself as a KJ, meaning karaoke jockey. If you are new to the business, and have just been given your first contract it doesn’t matter how confident you are, there will still be some jitters. Its different when you and a bunch of friends got together for a night of fun and some laughs. Now this is serious business there is money involved here.

Technically this is your business and should be carried out in a business fashion. First before you even leave home, make sure all of your karaoke equipment is working properly, and is clean and presentable. Make a check list of everything you are going to require for your evening of entertainment. Have plenty of pencils for writing out requests, and make sure they are sharpened. Don’t leave getting yourself organized till the last minute. If you do surely you will end up forgetting something. That’s not too bad if you’re only going five minutes from home, but if its an hour away it could be disastrous.

Know exactly what the dress code is for the event you are performing at. If it’s a wedding you really don’t want to be showing up in blue jeans. Dress accordingly. Arrive early and set up your equipment, as its much easier to set up with less people around, especially where kids are involved. All kids get excited about karaoke, and if they are all gathered by the time you get there, you will probably be swarmed in a good natured way.

Once you are all set up, if you are not going to be starting for awhile, see if you can rope off your area. People are intrigued with the karaoke setup, and you don’t want your equipment touched. If possible mingle with the people a little bit. This will be good for you because you won’t feel so strange when you start your show. It will also loosen the crowd up a little bit, and they won’t feel so timid at getting up to participate. Also try to get a feel for the type of music that’s going to be of the most interest.

Start at the time you are scheduled to start, otherwise your audience is going to get restless, and some of them may leave, especially if there are other events going on. You will have your own style and your own approach, just stay with that. Make absolutely sure everyone knows how to register to sing. Have your paper and pencils out where they can be seen, and some method for them to return them to you. Its very important to keep them in order as people get upset when they are waiting forever to get up to sing, but their buddy has already been up two or three times. Above all relax after all you are the professional and its your karaoke show.
