How to Choose the Right Replacement Lawn Tractor Tires

When you purchased your lawn tractor, it came with the manufacturer's all purpose tires, which can last a long time, but if you purchased a used model, you may have to replace the tires right away depending on how long the previous owner had it. After observing the lawn tractor tires performance, you may find that the set may not be ideal for the terrain in your area. You might find that they aren't getting enough traction, or even worse, they may be damaging to your lawn.

When looking for replacement lawn tractor tires, it would be best to select the same size tires that the tractor or mower came with. These are labeled in metric measurements on the side of the tire, in the two or three number display method. In the 2-number method, the first number represents the width, and the second number is the rim size. In the 3-number display, the first would be the height, the second would be the width, and the third represents the rim size.

The next consideration would be choosing the right tread type for your terrain. A round shoulder turf tire goes on the front of the tractor, and is characterized by a low tread depth, that reduces the damage to your lawn. Square shoulder turf tires on the other hand are used on the rear, and these have a deeper tread for better traction or cornering. Rib tread tires have the least tread, and Lug tread tires have the most, and are used in looser soil, very uneven terrain, and even for plowing snow. With all the choices, it would be best to consult an expert at your local dealer.

Once you have your new lawn tractor tires, you need to care for them properly to ensure they last. Make sure you keep them clean, and check the tire pressure before each use, following the PSI value on the side of the tire. This way you won't have to replace them as often.
