Treatment for Back Pain During Pregnancy

Along with all the other pains and discomfort that comes with pregnancy, pregnant women can also expect a fair amount of back pain. This is all part and parcel of being pregnant, and while most women feel that there is little that can be done to ease the symptoms, there are actually a few things that can be done for treatment for back pain during pregnancy.

One of the easiest yet most effective things you can do is to watch your sitting posture. Keep in mind that sitting puts a lot more strain on your spine than you would think, so it is important to make sure that the chair you use provides adequate support for your spine. In most cases, a chair with a straight back that has arms and a firm (but not overly soft) cushion is best. You may also get better support by using a footrest in order to raise your feet up a bit. As comfortable as crossing your legs is, it should also be avoided as this can cause the pelvis to tilt forward, increasing pressure on the back muscles. Always consult your doctor before any treatment for back pain during pregnancy.

When working at the office, it is important to take breaks every once in a while, since sitting for extended periods can worsen an existing back condition. Try to stand up and walk around once every hour or so. Conversely, you will want to avoid standing up for too long. If you have no choice but to stand up for long periods, you would be better off using a low stool and alternating placing your feet on it in order to relive pressure on your lower back.

Another important concern for pregnant women is wearing the proper shoes. While this may be hard for some to accept, it would be best to put your fashion sensibilities on hold for a few months while you are with child. High heels are definite no-no’s for women in this fragile state, but completely flat shoes are not necessarily. The best option is to wear shoes that have 2-inch heels, since this will help keep your spine aligned properly. You may also get better results by using orthopedic shoe inserts.

A firm mattress is a must at all times, but particularly so if you are pregnant. If your mattress is too soft, you may get better support by inserting a thin board underneath the bed sheet. You could also use a body pillow to make your sleeping more comfortable.

There are also crisscross support slings that provide treatment for back pain during pregnancy. These devices will help reduce the weight off the lower back, and are especially designed for pregnant women.

Many pregnant women also get relief from light exercises. Pelvic thrusts are particularly helpf

ul during these crucial months, and they can reduce lower back pain considerably.

A massage is good at any time and for anyone, but they are particularly beneficial for pregnant women. However, you do have to make sure to get a massage only after the first trimester and only from a masseuse who is thoroughly trained in prenatal massage techniques.
