A Truly Chilled Out Holiday.

Traditionally, holidays are the time to forget about work and relax: the typical image of the chilled out holiday maker usually features a tanned and healthy looking model lying on a beach or sipping a cocktail. The problem is, lounging around by the hotel pool for two weeks might be a guaranteed way to get a sun tan but it can also be a little bit, well, boring.

Although a sun and sand holiday is a great way to relax, more and more people are looking for a holiday that offers something a little bit different - something more active, something they've never experienced before or a destination that is off the beaten track. If this applies to you, it might be time to abandon thoughts of heading to a sun-drenched in favour of booking a holiday where you can chill out in the truest sense of the phrase... for instance, how about staying in an ice hotel in Sweden, or indulging in a spot of ice diving in the Arctic, or a husky ride through the stunning scenery of Scandinavia?

Chilly holidays are becoming more and more popular with adventurous holiday makers thanks to the growing range of packages on offer, through travel companies such as Arctic Direct. As the name suggests, Arctic Direct specialise in cold climate destinations; they offer an ever-growing list of destinations and activities, from traditional sports like cross country ski-ing to more outlandish pursuits like ice diving at the North Pole. And it's not only the activities that have an ice theme - if you're after the full Arctic experience you can book a few nights in Sweden's world famous ice hotel where you'll stay in a suite carved entirely from ice, swaddled in animal skin blankets and warmed up by traditional Swedish food and premium spirits.

Having 'the holiday of a lifetime' may be a cliche in the tourist industry, but by choosing a unique, by pushing your boundaries a little bit further, and by going against the grain of the sun and sand package, you'll be guaranteed to experience a holiday that you'll never forget
