How to Stay One Step Ahead of Other Online Poker Players

As you may probably already know, online poker is very different from the live version of the same game. Regardless of the poker room you choose to play in and the total number of players present at the virtual table, online poker games make it impossible for you to read body language and improvise on the spot based on any such revealing signs. The good news though is there are other ways to decipher the playing strategies of the competition in online poker, which we will discuss hereinafter.

The first aspect to account for when you are playing in a virtual poker room is the amount of time taken by each of your opponents to make decisions and react in the game. This is what professional poker players call a “stall”. While this method of reading the game may not be easy to get a grasp of at first, over time it will allow you to deduce and predict other players’ actions without the need to resort to visual observation. To polish your skills in this area, consider practicing on rookies, as such players are most likely to take refuge in the practice of stalling.

The number one reason why novice poker players stall during challenging games is hesitation. In fact, even when they have the advantage of strong card combinations like AA, KK, or AK, such players may still be undecided about the amount they should bet or raise. As a side note, always be alert at the poker table and try not to fall victim to the same trick yourself; ideally, you should attempt sending false messages to other players by deliberately stalling at important moments throughout the game.

When employing this method, you should focus particularly on players who you know to favor a fast-paced playing approach. If suddenly they appear to take too long to react in the game, there is a strong chance that they may be stalling. You should also be on the lookout for situations when slow players start playing unusually swiftly and take suspiciously big risks. Overall, any change that you manage to identify in the typical poker room conduct of an opponent is nothing but useful information, which can be used to outplay that particular player.

Since in the world of online poker you don’t get the chance to see your opponents too often, it is crucial to learn your competition’s way to the game and be quick at identifying changes in their usual poker playing patterns. Irrespective of the poker room that you may be playing in and the caliber of your adversaries, it is vital to account for such things if you want to grow as a player.

Another way to get relevant information about your opponents is to keep an eye on the messages typed in the chat box during games. Inexperienced players may occasionally give away important information about their next move without even realizing it, while players who are losing may let their frustration transpire by sending you insulting messages, showing you that it is time to take them out of the game.

Sometimes, you may also want to use the chat box to lure your opponents into playing mind games to make them lose their focus in the game. However, remember to weigh your words carefully before texting messages and to always keep a low profile at the virtual poker table.
