Futon Cover

A new futon cover is a great way to give any room a fresh, new look. There are many different types of futon covers available these days and knowing how to tell the good from the bad can be difficult if the only reference you have is your existing cover. In this article, I'll tell you the key features that you need to look out for when choosing a new futon cover to buy.

Material

The fabric used to make the futon cover is critical to its function. Low quality fabric will wear quickly and is easily damaged by children and pets. The material should also be easily washed and not require any special care.

Most futon covers are made of cotton or cotton/polyester mix twill or jersey knit cotton. "Suede" futon covers (most are simply polyester) are also becoming more common. The former is less luxurious but more practical. The latter can be machine washed but only cold. If you have kids then suede is generally not a great idea due to the risk of stains. However, one advantage that suede covers have is that they repel liquids very well. As already explained however, this does not mean that they cannot stain.

It is also possible to buy futon covers made of PVC that have the appearance of leather. While they undoubtedly are not as durable as leather, they do have the great advantage of being easily cleaned, requiring nothing more than a wet cloth.

Design

Futon covers have traditionally come in two main styles. Most are neutral or soft colors such as tan, olive green, burgundy, beige or pastel colors. Some are more vibrant such as rich reds and blues.

These days, there are a greater variety of styles available and futon covers can feature stripes, unique weaves, prints and other patterns.

Functionality

Most futon covers feature a high quality 3-sided zipper. If you can, check the quality of the zipper. Most zippers these days are of good quality. If the cover you are looking at is extremely cheap then check the zipper - it could be that they are using a counterfeit branded zipper that will jam or break the first time you use it.

You may also wish to consider getting a futon cover that is suitable for outdoor use. This is great for patios or for barbecues and other outdoor activities. Look for specialized fabrics intended for outdoor use that are resistant to sun exposure, will not fade and are water and soil resistant.

When slippery cover meets slippery frame

The soft cloth material of your futon mattress cover and the futon frame make a nice slippery combination. One Lady put it best when she said, “my kid loves it because he thinks it’s a ride”. It may be fun for kids but it can be very annoying pulling up the mattress every time it slides down the futon frame. The best way to combat that is with a futon mattress strap.
The futon mattress strap is an easy inexpensive solution to your problem. The strap is made of rugged 1 inch wide nylon webbing and durable plastic buckles.
You will love how the futon mattress strap tucks neatly in the crease of your mattress, you never see it and it keeps your futon and home looking great.
The strap installs across the length of the full futon mattress – you can install the strap in about 10 minutes and your mattress is secured in place.
