In case you are undecided whether to opt for a Plasma TV or an LCD TV, know that both options have their advantages and disadvantages, so you should carefully inspect and weigh their main features to pinpoint the alternative that is most suitable for you. In the following section of this article, we will have a look at the benefits and drawbacks of owning a flatscreen TV – be it a LED TV or a Plasma TV.

Advantages of Plasma TVs

The advantages of choosing a Plasma TV over an LED technology-based TV are: enhanced contrast ratio, increased capability of rendering deep blacks, better color depth, faster response time, as well as increased availability in terms of large sized screen models.

Disadvantages of Plasma TVs

When placed next to LCD TVs, the disadvantages of Plasma TV include: higher susceptibility to burn-in, increased heat generation and higher power consumption, unreliable when used at high altitudes, pronounced screen glare in bright light conditions, increased weight, and increased fragility – which makes shipping more problematic.

Advantages of LCD TVs

The advantage list for LCD TVs includes factors like reduced risk burn-in, less generated heat, better performance at high altitudes, prolonged service life, increased clarity and viewing comfort in bright lighting conditions, as well as lower power consumption.

Additionally, with the recent advancements in LED display technology, LCD TVs now come with higher pixel resolution capabilities, with numerous models offering display resolutions of up to 1080p (1920x1080) at convenient rates, and including screen sizes from 37-inches up. Although their Plasma TV counterparts have also gained a lot of ground in the market, few 1080p screen resolution choices are as affordable as LCD TVs.

Another plus of choosing an LCD TV over a Plasma TV consists in the higher affordability and compatibility of existing high-resolution LCD TV models with Blu-ray Discs, HD-DVD units, or Upscaling DVD Players. LCD TVs also score more points in terms of versatility, are generally lighter as compared to their Plasma counterparts and allow for easier installation and mounting.

Disadvantages of LCD TVs

Compared to Plasma TVs, today’s LCD models involve the following drawbacks: inferior contrast ratio, poorer capability of rendering deep blacks, a less effective tracking motion – although improvements are made in this area, and the latest generation of LCD TVs come with higher refresh rates, some up to 240Hz.

Moreover, despite the lower risk of burn-in associated with LCD TVs, individual pixels on LCD televisions are somewhat susceptible to burn outs, producing tiny, discernable, black or white dots on the display. Since there is no practical way to repair individual pixels, to take care of the problem you need to replace the entire LED screen. Above all, very large screen LCD TV models are generally more expensive than similarly sized Plasma TVs, although nowadays the differences have started to even out.

As you can see, neither Plasma TVs nor LCD TVs are perfect, and choosing one option over the other is mostly up to your personal needs, requirements, preferences, and finally yet importantly, available budget.
