If you’re blessed enough to possess a lawn, then sooner or later you’re going to require to get it cut. The simple choice is to pay someone else to do it for you! There are a lot of decent lawn maintenance and gardening firms around. However, if you do not have the finances for this or else you enjoy mowing the lawn (it can be very therapeutic) then you will need to purchase a lawn mower. But which one would you purchase? You will find a confusing array of brands, sizes, designs and different prices on the market.
You want to ask yourself a couple of questions to guarantee you select the right one. Clearly, your budget is usually a key problem, but consider the dimension of your lawn, what you use it for and what type of grass you have on it. I do know of at least one particular company who promote thier gardening services who own a variety of lawn mowers and use time when they turn up at your premises determining which mower is best for that task before them.

The Size and Shape of Your Lawn
Those wealthy people with large, regular lawns have different needs from them people with small, uneven shaped ones. So, for instance, if you've got a lot of lawn to cut with few obstacles like flower beds or trees, then a sit on lawn mower is ideal. These are expensive, fairly large and bulky, also you might need somewhere to keep it, of course. But They are brilliant for cutting large areas of grass and for impressing the neighbours! The good brands are Honda, Hayter, Lawn King, Mountfield, Yardman, Snapper, Toro and Lawnflite. For slighter areas with trees and curved borders, a small, light, manoeuvrable mower ought to be your first choice. Anything too powerful or bulky will tire you out quickly.
Should I Pick an Electric or Petrol Powered Lawn Mower?
The choice between electric and petrol powered mowers comes right down to the idiosyncrasies of your garden. If you do not have any easy access to electricity, or you have tough weeds and need power, or else you don’t wish to run an extended cable for example, then a petrol mower must be your first choice. They are usually more powerful than electric mowers, but they require regular maintenance - very similar to a car - and keep in mind, they can be heavy and bulky. They can also require some strength to start up because most of them have a pull cord to crank up the ignition.
For little spaces, an electrical mower will almost certainly be your first choice. They are normally cheaper than petrol mowers, easy to maintain and smaller so they store easily. And there's even rechargeable electric mowers when you don’t have access to power.
Should I Pay for a Hover Mower, Rotary or Cylinder Mower?
Hover mowers are great for small, uneven areas with dissimilar kinds of grass. Think of areas with a lot of trees or flower beds with rounded boundaries and tight spaces. They will cut evenly but you will not get the stripes or rollered effect on the lawn that you have cut. Flymo and Allen produce the top hover mowers. For the perfect finish a cylinder mower is better. If you are able to afford it, pay for one with a roller attached on the rear. A good quality cylinder mower will give the cleanest, neatest looking cut of all and with the roller attached gives you that Wimbledon lawn finish. Beautiful. Good brands of cylinder petrol mower: Qualcast, Atco, Lawnflight and Masport.
Rotary mowers fit just about in between the two. Ideal for larger lawns which might be just a little uneven or slightly overgrown. Perhaps a little bit too much to deal with for a hover mower. However, they will not provde the perfect bowling green finish.
Good brands of rotary mowers: McCulloch, IBEA, Honda, Lawn King, Lawnflite, Lawnpro, Mitox, Tuffcut and Victa.
What to do With The Lawn Clippings.
Some gardeners advise that when you do not have too may trimmings, they should be left over the lawn as nutrients for the grass. I do not subscribe to using this method, however. If your lawn needs feeding, look into buying some lawn feed products. Lawn clippings make the lawn look a mess and can also prevent light reaching the fresh growing grass, which leads to discolouration and damage.
So unless you like raking up clippings, choose a lawn mower which has a collection box. After that, all you have to do is empty it when it becomes full. Much less strenuous! Normally, with lawn cutting, you get out what you place in. So, buy the very best mower that you can pay for, whichever kind of mower you choose. Good luck with the lawn!
