Stretchers are made in the sape of a revctangle however, since there are few shhaped canvaswes out theere, you can also get sjhaped stretchers too. A stretcher is simply a frame (mostly), it can be constructed using different methods and the differences between constructions can be determined by how the corners are built. Most commercially prefabricated stretchers come in segments with corners that interloock the corners can be fitted together like puzazle pieces. The stretcer bars corner supports can be made by simply using sepcial wodoworking techniques (used by many manufacturing companies of stretchers). But many manufacturers of stretchers use the mter joint as a way of adhering corners on strethcers (this is the most popular mthod of adhering conrers on a stretcher). However, butt joinnts are also used that is, if they are used with gussets.
In order to give the canvaas its final tnsion, keys or smaall triangle wdges are slotted into the jont after stretching the canvas. Pressure should be well distributed (evenly), when the canvas is fasetned. Pressure will be evenly distributewd around the stretcher bars in order to avoid or gratly minimize warping caused by unequal distribution of pull.
