A Better Way of Communicating

Most teachers would think they had it made if they taught only six students all day. Still, things are quite the opposite for a hearing impaired program's lady instructor. All six of her students who are aged from 5 to 15 belong to a program set up by the local cooperative for special education and funded by a three year federal grant. There are 19 school districts serviced by the coop where classes on learning disabilities are available.

Her six students have two that are hard of hearing and four that are profoundly deaf. Being in a regular classroom is not impossible for the hard of hearing but a decibel loss of 60 or less necessitates that special assistance be given to them. Those classified as profoundly deaf have a loss of 90 decibels or more. Making special learning methods available for someone is valuable in this case. In the class for the hearing impaired, all students have their own hearing aids depending on their capacity and hearing needs.

Instruction is given by the teacher and heard by the students through the use of a special audio device. 83 radio frequencies can work with this kind of phonic ear system. Through a microphone like instrument, the teacher is able to relay speech to the receivers worn by the children. The different frequencies allow the teacher to communicate with one child at a time without interrupting the other children's work.

11/2 hours of traveling is required for students to reach the one room facility described as nothing short of being fantastic. A huge amount of money has been used to allow for everything being crafted specially. From a complete kitchen to audio and visual equipment, all can be found in the carpeted room. With the kitchen, the students are able to learn language by interpreting recipes.

The students are faced by the obstacle pertaining to language so the teacher does everything with language. Each word is repeated 10,000 times for it to be recalled by a student. Such a method is gravely important for these students even if others find it boring. Words that describe objects are fairly simple for the hard of hearing child to grasp, because they can associate by sight. Nevertheless not much meaning is associated with words like time, yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Instructional methods come in different types. In order to give a total communication learning experience, the teacher stresses the need for both signs and speech. By looking at how another person's lips are moving a student can understand what he is saying and lip reading is also being taught. The teachers favors oral instruction and this leads to the requirement of students to communicate verbally. Since these children live in the same society as us then they will be accepted if they communicate in the same way.

By using the tactile method, teachers teach students through the sense of touch. In order to become acclimated with the g, s, or th sounds, students feel the tongue or touch the throat of the teacher. Entering the classroom comes with the knowledge of probably having a student's hand in her mouth sooner or later. Instruction is provided in the subjects including spelling, math, grammar, and social studies. When it comes to the preparations for integration into a regular school system, a student may be tasked to take up subjects including gym, music, typing, home economics, speech, and auto mechanics. Students allowed to attend the class must be 18 and younger.

It is possible for others to question her intentions for working with the hard of hearing. No secrets are kept with regard to her choice of careers. Just turning five years old, she was diagnosed with a hearing impairment. At the time of her birth, no cartilage was found in her ears and her eustachian tubes were closed. Hearing loss was solved for this teacher and the people she worked with through corrective surgery. This career path was determined by her as early as during the fifth grade when she wanted to be of help to children.

Studying in a college in Illinois, she now carries a special education degree. A certificate in learning disabilities and degrees in deaf and elementary education are her achievements when she attended a university in Florida soon after. She was a teacher in a school for the deaf in fort Lauderdale before arriving in Southwest Kansas two years ago. Even if she encounters challenges in her work day in and day out, the phonic ear system she uses helps her out as the students have no choice but to listen because the sound goes directly into their ears.
