Everyones familiar with the simple hanging scale from the produce department or butcher shop at the local grocery store.

For years, industrial grade, digital hanging scales (or "crane scales") have been available for high-capacity applications such as warehouses, factories, shipping and receiving, educational, scientific and other uses. Now crane scales can be found with a full range of modern features and fully-wireless operation, allowing ease of maintenance, accuracy and a whole range of other added value features for users. These are all things to look for in a modern wireless crane scale:

* Long hours of battery life (AA disposable or rechargeable batteries)
* Load cell constructed of aerospace steel or aircraft stainless steel
* Multi-cell systems, incorporating measurements from several wireless load cells which are then summed up and shown on one display
* Protection from external shocks
* Overload warning
* Remote control range of up to 150 yards
* Proof-testing to 200% of capacity
* Low battery warnings for the load cell battery and the hand-held remote control or indicator
* Tare settings
* Settings that are all retained when the units power is off
* Temperature range from -15 F to 175 F for load cell, -4 f to 158 F for indicator

A high quality wireless crane scale will have a electronic controls to average the display for a shaky or unstable load. With either a J-hook or shank hook, the crane scale should be rated for a load at least 4 times the capacity before the hook starts to deform. A 1” LCD display is common, with some units using as large as a 4" display. Like many other styles of modern scales, wireless crane scales will often come with a USB connection and printer port, sometimes with their own software so they can interface directly with a PC or laptop. The baud rate should be selectable by the user.

Higher quality wireless load scales are also available with a thermometer that displays in real time the temperature of the load cell (in Celsius or Fahrenheit), enabling the user to prevent overheating of the load cell itself. Most will also include a rubberized housing for shock protection, and the circuit board will also be on shock dampening mounts to protect the internal parts of the unit from shock or impact. Wireless crane scales will come calibrated from the factory, and can be fully calibrated by the user himself once theyre in the field. Fatigue rated load cells can withstand at least 20,000 load cycles, at 150% of the scales rated capacity ( a big improvement over older styles of hanging scales or crane scales).

Wireless crane scales are often available in capacities up to 20000 lbs, and are available in measurement units that include:

* deca newtons
* kilo newtons
* newtons
* metric tons
* short tons
* kilograms/pounds

As with many other newer, upgraded technologies, wireless crane scales give the user a great deal of accuracy in a durable, robust, affordable package (suitable for hot or all-weather settings) that requires little maintenance.
