How to Choose a Fleet Tracking Company

Fleet tracking is very important for any company that regularly uses multiple long-distance vehicles, whether those vehicles are used to transport goods, transport people, or dispatch papers and messages. But choosing a fleet tracking company can be a bit daunting, especially with the number of choices available. Here are some basic tips to help you choose the vehicle tracking system that’s right for your company.

First figure out the logistics of your company. How many vehicles does your company use regularly, and what type of vehicles? And are you going to want to monitor these vehicles all the time or only on certain occasions? You should also consider whether your fleet tracking system needs to be concealed or whether it can simply be installed where anyone can see it.

Find a local company. Local companies are often more trustworthy because you can visit them in person and actually speak to the people in charge. A local company also means that when your vehicle tracking systems need to be repaired or parts replaced, it’s a lot easier and faster to get that done.

Some things you might want to ask the company: Does the company subcontract the installations or do you do these yourself? (Subcontracted work will take longer.) Do you need to install any special software before the system can be installed? How long do repairs take? What kind of information does the system monitor? How much does the system cost?

The price of the system may include periodic maintenance, but this is not a given, so you need to ask. You can also ask whether the system can be leased if you can’t afford to buy it outright, or if you want to test it before deciding on which company to go with. Finally, go with someone you trust. If you don’t feel comfortable with the system, keep asking questions, or move on to someone else.
