From the dawn of mankind, music has been an effective tool for community bonding. Primitive humans organized social gatherings around drum circles. Thousands of years later, many modern people still use drumming as a mechanism for bringing populations together. A large segment of tribal groups have never given up the custom of communal drumming. Young people in industrialized societies often gather informal drum circles at colleges as a means of giving the student body a shared sense of identity. Communal drumming is even used by contemporary corporations from San Francisco to San Diego for team building among their employees.

Creating music requires a degree of cooperation comparable to that of running a business. A variety of people perform different functions, but all contribute to a shared goal. Just as participants in a musical endeavor strive to make harmonious sounds that are in tune with one another, participants in a business endeavor strive to make sure the business succeeds. Team building drumming is valuable to the goals of a company because every member’s contribution is of equal value. In a business different hierarchies and salary levels exist, which can contribute to a feeling of inadequacy among some members of the group. In a team drumming effort, superiors and subordinates in the company work directly with each other in an enjoyable exercise that favors no particular musician. Drumming is a rhythmic form of music, entirely dependent upon the synchronization of the team of performers.

Los Angeles team building events demonstrate the success of group drumming. Motivational speakers can be useful in inspiring employees to feel connected with their company. However, supplementing presentations with musical efforts is highly rewarding because it requires immediate participation among employees in a collaborative task. It is a fun task, which creates positive associations with the group that is performing the music. Music holds relevance to all cultures and drumming is arguably the most universal form of music. Drums appear in a variety of cultures and musical styles, from indigenous folk music, to classical music, to pop music.
