Developing a structure for a website may be more important than any other single process a new web master faces. For those of us without degrees in information technology, it can also be overwhelming. Finding an easy to use platform that is flexible and intuitive is necessary. Two of the most popular, Joomla and WordPress, offer users a chance to develop content without spending weeks in web design class. With different functions and different features, both platforms are useful and serve a purpose. Deciding which platform is right for you is little more than a matter of personal choice.
First, it is important to understand the main purpose of these two platforms. WordPress is perhaps best known as a blogging platform. It is typically used by people looking to manage blogs and add category posts. It can be used to create all the content for a site.. Joomla, on the other hand is a content management system, or CMS. It is a much more inclusive platform. At their hearts, the two platforms can be used for the same purpose, but one is much more suited to content management and one to blogging.

* The two systems are easy to use. Online tutorials, clear instructions and large communities and forums exist for both platforms. There are some who believe that WordPress is slightly more user friendly, but with the support offered by both platforms, one can easily use either system.
* Security is also an important consideration. Joomla users often note the importance of installing frequent updates to ensure security, but they also note that the updates do their jobs. The two systems effectively ‘tie’ in the category of security concerns.
* Both systems offer multiple extensions. WordPress simply offers more extensions and plugins than Joomla, owing to their natures.
* Both systems have large libraries of templates – many of which are free. WordPress templates do tend to offer the user a higher degree of flexibility.
When attempting to select one for use, it is a great idea to try them both out – if you have the time. If not, the single greatest difference between the two platforms is likely to be your deciding factor. If you are planning a blog, you should most likely work with WordPress. Any other purpose would be better served by Joomla. Just remember – both platforms can be used for almost any content imaginable. Both platforms are ‘open source.’ This has allowed both systems to develop extensive followings of loyal users. Try them both out, see what works for you and begin creating content!
There is no answer to the question ‘which is better?’ Similar features and even some shared strengths make it hard to pick a clear winner. Carefully consider your purpose and your ability to help choose what system is best for you. You will be well on your way to creating the content you want.
