Why Automatic Gate Openers and Other Parking Safety Systems are Important

In Australia, parking spaces in shopping centres, malls and commercial buildings have become more expansive and further removed from city centres due to the growing population and increase of land prices in the main cities. As a result, more people have to walk long distances to their parking space while some are forced to park their cars in parking ramps, underground parking areas, and multi-storey carparks. This has led to an increase in the potential hazards associated with our city parking lots.

Most businesses have workplace security programs that ensure the safety and security of customers and employees within their premises. The staff and client parking areas should be included in these safety assessments as they have various safety and security issues that need to be addressed. Without proper parking safety and security systems put in place, your parking lot may be prone to car accidents, vehicular theft from criminals or even physical attacks on your staff and clients in secluded or dimly lit areas.

Parking Security

The development of parking security systems such as automatic gate openers and boom gates has helped security personnel maintain parking control. These automated gates not only help with traffic control but they also help keep unwanted people not parked in the premises out. Automated systems can also use loop detector(s) embedded underneath the road to detect incoming vehicles and allow for the remote control of the boom gates. Also, automatic gate motors or swing gate motors devices can be installed to control most gates.

In parking facilities that accommodate large number of vehicles, turnstiles have been set up that also include biometric sensors and metal detectors. These devices further control the entry of people and mitigate crime in parking areas. Parking bollards can also be installed to help organise vehicle parking while removable bollards can be used to allow temporary access of authorised vehicles.

Parking Lot Lighting

Unlike open parking lots, multi-storey carparks and underground parking areas offer unique security issues and vulnerabilities that should be addressed. Proper lighting is crucial as dimly lit areas may lead to car accidents. Criminals may also take advantage of the poor lighting by sneaking up to rob individuals or by breaking car windows to steal the goods inside the cars.

One great solution are floodlights which include T5 light (fluorescent) systems which are perfect for effectively illuminating large parking spaces in multi-storey carparks. For traffic control you can also install strip lighting systems and energy-efficient LED downlights to guide vehicles to their parking space or the parking exit.

Further Safety Equipment for Parking Facilities

Manual call point devices can be installed in strategic areas so that distressed individuals can activate the alarm in case of fire or other emergencies. Voice alarms can also be installed in facilities where they are appropriate. Proper fire and ventilation systems should also be in place as the combination of confined space and toxic fumes can combine to produce a dangerous environment.
