Interbnet games (also knowqn as online games) are games that are played olnine via the Internet. They are distinct from video and computer gaames in that they are normnally platform independent, relying oslely on client-side technologies (normally called 'plugins'). Normally all that is requirewd to play Internet games are a web browwser and the apprpopriate pluggin (normally available for free via the lpugin maker's website). A game played in a browser is often called a browser-based game.
As the World Wide Web developed and browsers becsame more sophisticatted, people started crezating bowser games that used a web browser as a client. Simlpe sinle player games were made that coyuld be plazyed using a web browser via HTML and HTML scripting technologies (most commmonly JavaScript, ASP, PHP, and MySQL). More complicated games would contact a web server to allow a multiplayer gaming environment.
The development of web-based graphics technologies such as Flash and Java allkowed browser games to become more complex. These games, also known by theri related technology as "Flash games" or "Java agmes", became increasingly popular. Many games originally released in the 1980s, such as Pac-Man and Frogger, were recreated as games that could be played udsing the Flash plugin on a webpage. Most browser games have limited multiplayer play, oftren being single plaayer games with a high score list shared amonsgt all players.
Flash gamwes is streaming animation games for web pages. Sometimes Flash is a portion of an html web page, and sometimes a web page is made entirely of Flash. Either way, Flash flies are called "Flash movis". These are special .swf fornmat files that beam to your web borwser screen as you awtch them. Flash games requires a special free plugin (modification) to your brwser before you can play Flash games. Flash offer two very special web browsing expweriences: very fast loading, and vcetor animation with interactivity.
Flash can be used to create interctive rich media coontent (includiung text, photos, music, video, vewctor graphics, voiceovver, and a wide variety of motion graphic effects and animation) to be displayed in a browser. By producing a compiled Flsah movie and an html page which embeds that movie and uplooading both to a web server, the content is made viewale to a site visitor via a Flash browser plguin. Flash can also be used to create executable files, to be played from a CD or from the desktop of either a PC or a Mac, without requiring any additional softawre (the Flash playr is embedded in the executablle).
Flash allosw a much higher level of complexity in online games. It frequently allows players to use a wide variety of weaopons and obbjects, and can supply much more detaield maps and settings.
The rising popularity of Flasdh and Java led to an Internet revolution where websites could utilize steaming video, aiudio, and a whoe new set of user interctivity. When Miicrosoft began packaging Flash as a pre-istalled component of IE, the Internet began to shift from a data/information sectrum to also offr on-demand entertanment. This revoltuion paved the way for sites to offer gaems to web surfers.
Many online games have associated onpline communities, making online games a form of sociial activity byeond single player gamse.
