Converting an 8mm to DVD format can be done right from your home. You will need the necessary equipment to help you accomplish this. To ensure good quality, you should choose a good 8mm movie projector which has at least three-bladed shutter and variable speed control.

You will also need a camcorder that has a variable exposure and shutter speed control, and a White Card or Film Transfer box. If you prefer the White Card method, it will function as a small screen when the film projector projects the image into it. You can also use a White Foam Core board and attach it to your wall.

The camcorder should be positioned with the lens lining up in parallel with film projector lens, or directly in front of the projection screen. If it is placed off center from the screen, it will cause distortion to the projected image known as the ‘keystoning.’

Your camcorder should be mounted on a tripod and be positioned as close to the projector as possible, and the camera lens must also face the screen. Insert a videotape into your camcorder and turn off all the lights in the room to make it as dark as possible.

Thread the 8mm projector with the film you wish to convert. A portion of the film should be projected onto the White board or poster board, and confirm that the image is leveled, focused and fills the screen.

Switch the camcorder, and adjust the camera position so that its lens focuses on the film image from the White screen. The image should be sharp and fills the viewfinder of your camcorder.

Rewind the film to the beginning, if it is has not rewound yet. Press the Record button on your camcorder and start projecting the film reel until it is finished. Then the camcorder will capture the image from the White Card and sends it to the DVD recorder or VCR.

The Audio and Video outputs of the camcorder are connected to the Audio and Video inputs of a DVD recorder. However, you need to remember that you should not put the tape into the camcorder, unless you want to make a backup copy simultaneously. The camcorder will feed the live image into the video inputs of the DVD recorder or VCR.

If you use the Film Transfer Box method to convert 8mm to DVD, the movie projector projects the image onto a mirror. In turn, the mirror is deflected into the camcorder lens. Then the camcorder will capture the image from the mirror and sends it to the DVD recorder.

If you do not want to go through the trouble, you can have a professional work on your 8mm to DVD task. The quality is sure to be excellent. At times, the reception of the film or file will even be better on DVD than on 8mm tape.

Being able to convert an 8mm to DVD format files allows you to preserve memories captured through the classic technology. You can also preserve your favorite films in 8mm.
