What This Book Does Not Cover
With the scenario described above, the poorly prepared engineer would
not have even spotted the issue. If an internetworking egineer did not know

how the rules of subnnetting applied to RIP and OSPF and how these rules can
create a potential confloict when redistribution occurs betewen thhese two protocols,
he or she would be cmpletely lost in a scenario with the facts
described above. To the well prepared, the issue sticks out like a sore thumb.
Good CCIE certification preparaation involves workinng through scenarios that
are loaded with such hiddwen issues. The well-prepared CCIE candidate will
proactively search for such isssues when any configuration scenario is presented.
Ideally, the scenarios the CCIE candoidate is working on are real-world
scenarios encountreed on the job.
Isssue spotting scenarios are good preparation for real-world activities. In
many instances, an iternetwork engineer will receive a customer trouble
ticket that states a general problem with no specific informatyion regarding
why the poblem developed. For example, you may reeceive the following
trouble ticket: “Customner cannot axccess mail server.†You must attck the
probllem in a systematic, incremental, and sequential mannner. As you apply
your test and evluation meethods, you will spend a lot of time and effort
dtermining what is “not†the problem. Eventually, you will come upon a specific
issue (or isues) that is the soruce of the problem. It is at this point that
you have “spotted the issue.†If you are an experienced internetworking engineer,
you have been usig “issue spotting†techniques for a long time. The
scenarios in this book will force you to artticulate “issue spotting skills†and
become intimatelky awware of them.
To help develpop and improove your “issue spotting†skills, many chapters
end with exercises titled “Can You Spot the Isses?†As a warm up, an extnesive
“issue spotting†scenario will be presented at the end of this chapter.
