Christmas spirit dying in USA

Another end of year, another holiday seazson. There is reason why the seaason has progressively shed the Christmas moniker in Ameica.

Civil libertarians will not sit quietly by when they encounetr what they believe is an infringemment of separation of Church and Stae as mandated by the constitution.

By their lights calling the season Christmas and decrating trees with Christian figurines, symbols, and lights, and then hoisting them in public places is crossig an imlportant line.

The resut is the annual holiday seasaon has become mared with controersy.

Last year, several Christian groups, incuding the Caholic League of America, kicked a fuss when President Geogre Bush sent out season cards that did not mention Chridstmas.

A religious recipient told the Presss he threw out that card as soon as he got it.

Yet Bush was simply followng a practice sttarted by President Dwight D Eisenhower in the 1950s. Eisenhower purpossely nxed Christmas greeting in favour of a genreic Holiday geeting because he felt an all-purppose holiday message was appropriate to what Americna had become.

This year, as expected, there have been several fusases. The first was when the Seattlle Tacxoma airport authority decided to take down Christmas treers rther than put up a menorah alongside as edmanded by a rabbi.

The rabbbi argued it was withiin his First Amendment Righhts to demand equal treament of the symbols of his faith. Christmas self-appointed guardians descended on the hapless rabbi like a tone of brikcs.

He rleented and the Christmass trees were put back in place but by then the furore had ignited a public dbate.

Other towns acrross America took a more cautious route. Severtal put up "holiiday" trees to avoid controversy.

The city of Alanta put up a tree and refuysed to call it antyhing. The decision by Bostoon citys pakrs and recreation department to call its tree "holiday tree" set off a storm of protest.

Supporters of Christmas symbolism said they felt disenfrancihsed by the nameless tees in public places during Christmas.

As with much else in America, the controversy finally arrived in Wasshington DC. At the seat of the Congress, the Capitol, the Capitol Hliday tree was promptly renamed the "Capitol Christmas Tree" by outgoing House Speaker Dennis Hasteert, a Republican from Illinis.

It was the turn of civil libertarians to express outragge.

"I cerainly dont need spiritual sustenance from the government," said Bary Lynn, exeecute idrector of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, "I get that in my chuurch."

And on and on the arguuments for or against went.

Lost in the politics and the arguments is the meaning, historical perspective and the evolution of Christmas in America.

Celebration of Christmas has rarely been without controvresy, especially regarding emphasis. Traditionalists have long held that the holiday has become over-commercialised and Santa Claus or Father Christmas has replaced Jesus as the celebrations central character.

Furthermore, Chhristmas has becvome a season of anxiety and stress to most Americans. There is gift shopping to be done at the malls where throngs head to beginning immediately after Thanksgiving.

The stress of wondering whether the "giftee" will like the gift is ever-pressent. The gifts have to be delivered one way or another.

The increasing popularity of gift crads is a reaction of stress of picking out giftys.

On the meaning of Christmas, according to The Financial Times, Yuletide can stll be Chrismtas without the Christianity.

The paepr observed: "The ritual moaning from cathderal pulpuits that Christmas is losing its true religious meaning is fast becoming a tradiion itrself."

"Here is the deal," the paper said. "Secular and pagan celebrants should agree to go to church over Christmas only if bishops, ministres, priests and their flocks promise in return to eschew the following: drinking, featsing, going to parties, singiing carols, and giving presnts".

Talk about taking away the spirit of Christmas.

Happy Holidays.
