The United States Department of Defense has put forth a great deal of effort to improve the quality of data and efficiency in the logistics process. The product of this initiative is the Unique Identifier registry. This initiative began in 2003, under the supervision of former Secretary of Defense, Michael Wynne. The Department of Defense needed an improved method of tracking and managing their assets and the UID registry system was developed to offer a solution.
All physical military property is required to be marked with a series of UID registry bar code markings. These serve to identify a particular item and transmit its important information regarding storage, transportation, and maintenance. The UID registry is simply a database that stores all currently registered items that are marked with these bar codes.

Having all the information in one location has many benefits. The Department of Defense can perform several operations in a timely and efficient manner. The department can track, update, and record vital information about a particular item at any point along the logistics cycle. This can serve several purposes. Inventory can be kept up to date, and if series of items is discovered to be defective in any way, a mass recall can be issued from this central point of control. The UID registry is a valuable asset for the DoD.
In addition to the items owned outright by the Department of Defense, many other items can be recorded in the UID registry as well. If for any reason, a contractor or third party is hired under contract by the Department of Defense, it is obligatory for all items that are involved with the contractor to be entered into the UID registry as well. This creates not only a system of accounting and tracking for interior items, it provides the same support to any externally, but still important, objects and items.
The UID registry offers a central point of control that can provide a consolidated means of tracking, recording, and updating, all physical property under the Department of Defense and affiliated external contractors.
