What is Boho?

“Boho” fashion borrows its name from the word “bohemian”, but it has taken on a life of its own, and as so often in the shifting sands of trend and fashion, is not easy to pin down.

The term “boho-chic” hit the media in the mid noughties, led by trend-setting celebrities Sienna Miller, Kate Moss, the Olsen sisters and Nicole Richie. Elements of hippy and folk combined in floaty skirts, often white, broad coin belts, furry gilts and sheepskin boots. An interesting history of boho in this period is set out in Wikipedia. One of the more curious parts of the story is the association of boho with the recovery in the fortunes of Britain’s favourite retailer, Marks & Spencer (M &S). In 2005-6, M&S enjoyed a dramatic recovery in its fortunes as the result of the success of a range of women’s clothing that owed much to the influence of boho.

With high street trends coming and going, the heartland of boho is now to be found in the small specialist boutiques, often selling mostly or even exclusively online. Boho fashion mixes comfortably with stylish vintage wear in the boutiques featured on the Vintage Clothing street of The Online Shopping Town in the UK. With influences of hippy, ethnic and even gothic, boho still thrives in colourful, often layered boho dresses such as those sold under the Swirl Clothing brand.

Interestingly, having come to public attention draping the figures of slim starlets like Sienna Miller, boho fashion is now growing in popularity in the plus size market, principally because the flowing or layered styles remain attractive in larger sizes.
Swirl own label clothing is made for you in Bali, Indonesia, by a family run company.

Items are often "one size" or "OS" (as in "one size fits all"!) - and are carefully measured for you to see if they will fit. We list the UK sizes we expect will work for each item, but please check the measurements provided to ensure an item will work for you. Many OS items are suitable for a UK 10 to a UK 22. We stock a substantial range of gorgeous clothes in larger plus sizes too, suitable for up to UK 28 or 30.
