I was at my native library recently, attempting to choose my next book. Reading the jacket of "Velocity" created me pick it immediately. The premise: a bartender named Billy Wiles finds a note on his automobile one night once work. The note contains an ultimatum: If he turns the note over to the police, "an elderly lady active in charity work" will be killed. If he does not involve the police, "a beautiful blonde schoolteacher from the Napa Valley" will be killed instead. Though Billy may not take the note seriously at initial, he soon finds out that the one who left the note is quite serious with the threat, and then another note shows up. What follows may be a very intense, suspenseful struggle between Billy (a former struggling writer) and also the unknown killer. Everybody becomes a suspect and there are multiple surprises until the final conclusion, a showdown between the two.
Fans of thrillers can love this novel! It lives up to its title, that is for sure. It is a page-turner that is troublesome to place down. Koontz creates an everyday, "common man" in Billy Wiles that just about everybody can relate to, however of course he seems additional than he seems to be, like several of Koontz' characters. The plot keeps you guessing right up to the end.
I loved that I read "Velocity" very quickly - it was therefore suspenseful that I could not put it down! It conjointly stunned me several times. I simply couldn't keep previous the story, and there have been a variety of unexpected turns. Simply when I thought I may understand who the killer was, it absolutely was proven to not be that character.

This book made me think about myself in Billy's place. Would I be in a position to make the decisions he was forced to make? A subplot of this novel involves his fiance, a lady stuck in a very coma, and Billy's subversion into a normal, predictable life that he can control. The actions forced upon him make him face his past and act rather than passively live his life.
Koontz has written a range of bestsellers over the previous couple of decades, and it is easy to work out why. "Velocity" is simply one of his terribly successful thrillers that involve a higher message.
Koontz has a unique gift - a blending of superb writing vogue and vital yet accessible messages and themes.
To me, Koontz has improved greatly over the years. His earlier novels extremely should be held in an exceedingly much totally different lightweight than his later works. His earlier novels were fairly basic, average horror/thriller novels. His later work, though, has evolved into suspenseful tales containing higher messages. He tends to convey a message of connectivity and importance - an issue that many lives are connected for a purpose that can at some point become clear. I personally love this concerning Koontz later work, and that's why I am going to continue reading him.
