The .IN registry has been generated BY NIXI, the National Internet Exchange of India. It is a non-profit company founded in 2003 to offer neutral Internet Exchange Point services in the country under Section 25 of the Indian Companies Act, 1956. The IN Registry functions as an autonomous body with primary responsibility for maintaining the .IN ccTLD and certified its process firmness, dependability and safety. It will employ the diverse elements of the new policy set out by the Government of India and its Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

The .IN Registry has also established Terms and Conditions for Registrants. All the registrants of .IN domain names will be covered by these terms and conditions, which may be amended by .IN Registry from time to time. The registry has devised new policies for the registration and management of .IN domain names. The goal is to make .IN domain name in India simpler to use, and a way of making the Internet available to more Indian citizens.
These are the general policies:

•Domain names can be registered for a minimum of one year and a maximum of ten years.
•Domains can be automatically renewed at the end of their expiration date.
•.IN domain may have a length between 3 and 63 characters.
•A domain name with letters, digits and hyphens are accepted. Names should not begin and end in hyphens.
•All the registrants should provide true and accurate contact information. The following information is required: Registrant, Administrative and Technical Billing. The contract data will be displayed in the .IN WHOIS, except for the Billing contract data, which is not displayed.
•The registrants are permitted to reassign their domains to the registrar of their choice. Registrants should get in touch with their registrar of choice to learn about the transfer procedures. Registrar-to-registrar transfer is not permitted in the 60 days following the creation of the domain name. A registrar-to-registrar transfer adds one year to the period of the domain name, charged to the gaining registrar. The registrars may charge the registrant for the domain year.
•There are certain grace periods exist to allow for the cancellation of transactions by registrars within the period of time.
•To register a domain, the registrant does not need to provide name servers. The use of at least two valid name servers is highly recommended. In order to appear in the zone file and resolve n the Internet, at least one year valid IPv4 or IPv6 name server must be associated with the domain name.
•Up to the present no applications for internationalized script shall be accepted. Hyphens in the domain name in the third and fourth positions will be rejected.
•The registry has the right to deny or suspend registrations which might cause conflict with the sovereign national interest or public order.
•The registry operator reserves the right to adjust the allocated bandwidth and connections allotted to the registrars.
