Before hitting the bestseller jackpot with Robert Langdon in THE DAVINCI CODE, Dan Brown wrote ANGELS & DEMONS. It's a similar mixture of mixing a philosophical attack on Catholic Church dogma with an exciting plot stuffed with murder, mysterious puzzles and exciting chases.

Not several thriller authors would attempt to blend the philosophical implications of the latest physics research, a historical anti-Church organization that many conspiracies still believe controls the planet, and therefore the art and architecture of The Vatican City -- all to create a quite serious purpose concerning the character of reality and therefore the inner truth behind each science and religion.
It's understandable why the Church did not permit the movie version to be shot inside the Vatican, however I believe Langdon's aim is directed at Church bureaucrats who have closed minds.

Like THE DAVINCI CODE, ANGELS & DEMONS begins with an bizarre murder in an very unlikely place. Although Robert Langdon is that the technical hero of each books, it's the exceptional men who are murdered at the start of each books who really set up and management the action.
Professor Vetra is the planet's most accomplished particle physicists. Deep within CERN -- The European Organization for Nuclear Analysis (English) or Organisation europ?enne pour la Recherche nucl?aire (French) in Switzerland, he ought to have been safe. Instead he is found dead, branded with the symbol of an organization believed defunct for several years -- The Illuminati.
What's worse, the intruder created off with a large chunk of Professor Vetra's latest accomplishment, the isolation of anti-matter. When anti-matter touches matter, each are reworked into energy. In short, it could be used to make a brand new kind of bomb.
The path leads to the Vatican where all 165 cardinals of the planet are gathered for The Holy Conclave to elect the subsequent pope.
Meanwhile, we have a tendency to're result in believe, the Illuminati have hired a Muslim Hassassin. (Centuries ago the Hassassin were killers for hire -- kind of a Middle Jap version of ninjas, however kept high on hashish. Like the Illuminati, this organization could be a historical fact but has not been existence for several years.)
Robert Langdon and therefore the professor's daughter Vittoria follow a path of clues through Vatican City to seek out the stolen anti-matter before it's used to kill the cardinals.
In the end, they assist save the Catholic Church from its most fanatic supporter. And, the author uses a senior cardinal as the voice of reason to explain to the book's villain how he owes his terribly life to the science he hates.
All this can be told during a prose style that's practical and quick-moving. Dan Brown will never win any fine-writing awards. This book is carried by its thriller plot and dense, factual detail.
I used to be disenchanted by the revelation at the end. It all made sense, but lacked the historical sweep and breadth evoked throughout the book. I know that's obscure, however to be more specific would be to allow away the ending.
Let's just say that the book's red herring was a ton more fascinating than its real villain.
Scan it for its charm for non secular tolerance or its plot or to learn regarding The Vatican Town's famous art and architecture.
