How many times have you received a catalog from retail companies, shopping malls or department stores? Once? Twice? Thrice? Or more than you could count? Most of the time, we keep catalogs from these stores for reference or for idle reading. You are bound to keep a catalog for yourself whether you intend to purchase from these stores or not. You may just want to take a look at products designs, compare prices between those that have the same features, or keep it for reference – when you finally decide to purchase a product out of necessity.

Catalogs are used by enterprises to introduce their new products, ranging from house furnishings to baby products, and offer promos or discounts when you get to purchase from them. So, if you want to promote your own products and services and generate buzz about your business or company, you can use catalogs for distribution to your target clientele. Catalogs can be done without having to hire a professional designer. You do not even have to get the services of a commercial printer. Everything you can do, you can do at your workstation.

The thought of doing catalog printing can be daunting to many, especially those who have no experience in making communication materials. However, these can be as easy as 1, 2, 3! You just have to use basic design concepts and principles, such as symmetry and balance! If you are up to take part in this design challenge, just keep in mind the ABC’s of catalog printing. You need not be a design whiz to create a catalog. Using simple computer programs, such as Microsoft Publisher, and your flair for design, you can make a catalog on your own.

- Open Microsoft Publisher. This computer program is easy to use and is suitable for beginners like you. After you open the program, choose catalogs as your publication type. You will be provided with different design templates. Browse through the different design templates. Choose one that matches the business image you want to project. You can also opt for a blank page. Here, you will have to make a catalog design from scratch.

- Add all the important information. Go over the design template first, though, to know what information you need to provide. Then, make the necessary changes: provide the catalog title, name of business, contact information, such as email address and website. Replace the default images with photographs of your products or services, and edit the descriptions. Provide detailed information about the features and pricing.

- Test print, proof read, and final save. In order to review and check the design and content of your catalog, run a test print. Always proof read the text and check the veracity of all information. You also need to check the framing and formatting for the whole catalog. Once you have made the necessary changes and you are already satisfied with the result, save the file for future use. You can now proceed with production en masse.

See, catalog printing can be easy. You just need to spend your time and effort into the challenge!
