Pollys Mansion – Bird cages

Bird cages vary in shapes and sizes, also in cost. Canaries and love birds are common house pets that can be housed in small bird cages, which can be hung by the window or over a coffee table. However, birds of a larger scale, such as crows and parrots, must be stored in larger cages, of a more stable ground or hanging area.

Parrot cages are found to be the most expensive cage for all house pet birds, in terms of its basic structure and necessary materials. Ordinary homes with parrot pets often just have a large square cage, capable of housing 3-4 parrot birds. However, the most popularly known design of parrot cages, which is the dome top, is not advisable for permanently housing a parrot, due to limited moving space for the bird. Such type of parrot cage is only advisable in transporting the animal from one place to another during trips.

Parrots are one of the biggest house pet birds, therefore, they should be given enough space to cross and fly. According to ornithologists, unavailability of enough moving space for any bird to fly may eventually cause damage to the natural structure of the animal, causing them to deteriorate, if not, to lose their natural framework and skill in flying.

However, parrot cages are not composed just by any metal material available. Cage railings must be composed of a material free from Zinc, since the said substance has been found to cause toxicity to parrots for several years. Wrapping of chicken wires around the cage is not also advised, due to other hazardous substance content. Aside from Zinc, cages should also be free from paints and other coats, since parrots tend to gnaw on the rails.

Aside from food bins, it is also important for parrot cages to have perches. These things should have measure enough to accommodate bird’s toes without them having to overlap with one another when they are completely around the perch. Perch areas help the parrots aim for flight, and could also serve as resting areas after flight.
