SealSkinz patented technology creates clothing which is waterproof, breathable and elastic. The middle layer of the “sandwich”, the waterproof breathable membrane, is corrugated. As the fabric is stretched, the membrane itself doesn’t stretch, it merely unfolds. This means that SealSkinz extend easily over the heel or hand as they are put on, and recover back to fit closely around the ankle or fingers. Because they fit closely, there are no excess folds of material, which could cause blistering.

SealSkinz 100% Waterproof Testing of all Socks and Gloves.
Every single SealSkinz product is tested before it leaves the factory. The sock or glove is mounted onto a machine which subjects it to water pressure. If any product leaks, the item is rejected. Every SealSkinz product is therefore guaranteed to be 100% waterproof.
The waterproof film can withstand 10psi of hydrostatic head pressure, the equivalent of a column of water 700cm high standing on the fabric surface. This is 7 times the level required to meet European Standards for waterproof clothing.
Breathability Index.
Breathability is measured by a water vapour permeability index in accordance with BS 3424: Part 34: 1992 Method 37. In this test, pieces of laminated fabric cover a small cup holding a measured mass of water.
The cup is allowed to stand in a controlled climate for several hours. At the end of the test, the cup is re-weighed to determine how much moisture from within the cup has evaporated and been expelled through the sample fabric.
Water vapour permeability (WVP) rating is then determined by comparison to a standard fabric given the same treatment. The SealSkinz range of Socks and SealSkinz Gloves all have a water vapour permeability index of 50-60% when measured in accordance with BS 3424: Part 34: 1992 Method 37.
Inner Layer
The inner layer is designed to be in direct contact with the skin, and to regulate the climate inside the sock or hand, keeping the wearer comfortable.
One factor in comfort is breathability. The rate of moisture transmission through the membrane, between the inner and outer layer, is driven by the humidity and temperature differences between the internal and external climates. Ideally, the membrane moisture transmission rate will match the rate at which moisture, in the form of perspiration, is being produced by the body. The rate at which moisture is being produced will vary according to the individual and his/her activity level.
Middle Layer
The waterproof breathable membrane is inserted using patented technology and allows perspiration to escape while preventing water from coming in.
Outer Layer
SealSkinz socks and gloves are covered with a durable nylon outer layer. Nylon is virtually indestructible, with a tenacity of 50 g/tex against, for example cotton, 32 g/tex or wool, 15g/tex. It has excellent elastic recovery properties: 97% elastic recovery at 5% extension against cotton (47% recovery) and wool (88% recovery).
Nylon is seldom used for socks because it is non-absorbent. The moisture regain of about 4% compares with absorbent cotton (9%) and wool (17%). For most socks/gloves this would be a disadvantage, because the nylon would be sweaty and uncomfortable to wear next to the skin.
However in Sealskinz products, the nylon is not next to the skin, the inner sock and membrane layers lie between, so as an outer layer it offers excellent protection to the membrane & dries out quickly.
